Rectal Cancer

Based on the location, size and spread of your cancer, your surgeon will decide if the portion of your colon or rectum that is affected can be removed while ensuring that no cancer cells are left behind; what is known as establishing negative margins. In most cases, the surgeon will reconnect the remaining ends of your colon to preserve your ability to have bowel movements. In some cases, typically with rectal cancers, your surgeon may also discuss the possibility of removing the end of the rectum, having it replaced with a colostomy bag.
